OrochiIwami Kagura

Orochi (The Giant Serpents)

One day the deity Susano, the brother of Amaterasu, came down to earth. When he was walking by the Hikawa River, he saw an old couple and their daughter grieving. They told him that seven of their daughters had already become victims to an eight-headed Orochi, and it was coming to attack their one last daughter that night. He decided to overcome the serpent to save their daughter.

It is the most popular play of Iwami Kagura. The dancers’ ingenious manipulation of 18 meter long serpent puppets is a great spectacle. It is a story which tells the origin of the Kusanagi Sword, one of the three sacred imperial treasures.
