The play, Suzuka-yama, depicts a heroic episode of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro who defeated a mob of ogres at Mt Suzuka in the late 8th century.
Sakanoue no Tamuramaro was given the title of Seiitai Shogun by Emperor Kanmu. (Seiitai Shogun was the title for a Japanese military general who was in charge of conquering the northern region of Japan where people were not subjects of the Japanese Emperor.)
Tamuramaro is also known as the founder of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. He met a Buddhist saint beside a clean stream and was advised not to kill anymore. He submitted and built a small temple.
